There are 30 children in Year 6 at the moment. During Year 6 the children are encouraged to continue developing their independence and confidence in preparation for their transfer to secondary schools in September.

They cheerfully accept many extra responsibilities during this year, from helping the new reception children to settle in, delivering registers and operating the overhead projector in assemblies to setting up a class council.

Obviously the main focus of the year is academic learning, and the children's hard work is reflected in the excellent results that they achieve in the KS2 SAT tests each year. Partnership with parents/carers is very important in Year 6. The pupils are given homework each day to enable parents to be familiar with the curriculum and to support their child with any difficulties. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the homework set -- it is not just extra work to be done at home.

Each day children are asked to read for at least 30 minutes to develop speed, fluency and concentration.

Physical development is a key learning area. Indoor PE takes place each Tuesday and outdoor games each Friday.

Many members of the class are in the teams and are encouraged to take part in competitive activities. Despite the focus on learning, we also have a great deal of fun Year 6. The children take leading roles in the school carol concert, a musical performance and maypole dancing.

During the Summer Term children have the opportunity to participate in cycling proficiency lessons.

The highlight of the year for many of the children is the residential visit to Kingswood which takes olace in September and creates a real chance to get to know each other.
