Our Mission Statement

Quality education brings confidence and independence. We pride ourselves in having established over many years, a caring, secure and stimulating school. We offer excellent educational opportunities to all children through the high quality of our staff, curriculum, accommodation and resources.

We pursue high standards, aiming to develop the full potential of all children, whatever their ability. We aim to equip them with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to take their place in society. We think it is important to develop self-discipline and responsibility by encouraging tolerance, understanding and respect for others.

We value and fully encourage the partnership between home and school. Our school is well organised, successful and happy. The staff set and expect high standards of behaviour and we promote the development of self-esteem.

I hope this web site explains much of what you need to know, but remember we welcome visits and we shall be pleased to discuss with you any aspect of our school.

Quality education brings confidence and independence

Norwood Community Primary School opened in 1975 and is sited on the north-eastern edge of the city, serving an area of mostly private housing that has been built in the intervening time.

Initially built to an open plan design, the school is now split into distinct classroom areas.  Further accommodation includes a central hall, administration centre, ICT suite, food resources area, three art areas, seven cloakrooms and a well stocked library for the use of all classes.  During the summer of 2006 staff facilities were extended and modernised.

Externally the site is well equipped with a large playing field, plus extensive grass and hard play space.  The reception class has its own, fully resourced, outdoor area that is enclosed whilst offering independence and choice in a secure area.  The whole of the grounds immediately surrounding the school have been developed in line with an environmental plan, which has included the planting of hedging and trees, two rockeries, wooden play equipment, additional seating and improved walk ways.

Currently there are 208 children on roll aged 4 -11 years.  There are eight full time teachers, including the head teacher and a team of teaching assistants.  The deputy head is currently Key Stage Two leader, we have a Special Needs Co-ordinator (TLR2) and a Teaching and Learning Leader (TLR2).

Intake

Norwood has been oversubscribed for many years with usually forty to fifty five children registered for the thirty available places.  Children come from a mixture of privately owned and council owned properties.  Whilst we have increasingly gained children from catchments serving nearby schools, there are children at the far end of our catchment (almost two miles away by road) who attend schools in the Werrington area.

Attendance is part time in the first five weeks and entry to school is usually extremely smooth.  We have a relatively low turn over of pupils once they have started at the school.
